About St. Mark's Church
The church of St. Mark is located near the chapel of St. Mark from the time of Prince Milos, which was built on the foundations of the old Palilula church, which was believed to be the tomb of the Obrenović family. The construction began during the reign of Aleksandar I Karadjordjevic, while the interior of the church was decorated after the Second World War. The design of the church was designed by the Krstić brothers, inspired by the Gracanica Monastery. The church stands out for its grandiose dimensions and was conceived as the new throne church of the old Yugoslavia. After the Temple of St. Sava, the Church of St. Mark is the most imposing building from the late period of Serbian architecture. The church houses one of the most important collections of icons from the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1830, the Sultan Hatesheriff on the recognition of Serbian autonomy within the Ottoman Empire was read near the church. Due to its special architectural qualities, the church is protected as a cultural monument by the state.
